Former Liverpool winger Sadio Mane transferred to the Saudi Pro League last summer and netted a late goal as his Al Nassr team drew with Roberto Firmino’s Al-Ahli.
Roberto Firmino was denied captaining his side to a second league win of the season on Friday after witnessing Sadio Mane’s team strike a 99th-minute equaliser.Firmino, now in his second season at Al-Ahli of the Saudi Pro League, looked to be on pace to secure three points away from home against Al-Nassr, only for a last-gap own goal to win a share of the spoils for Mane and co.Both Firmino and Mane played the full 90 minutes, yet were unable to get on the scoreboard during the 1-1 draw between respective sides. Had Al-Ahli held on, it would have been an improbable triumph for the visitors against a team expected to challenge Al-Hilal for the Saudi Pro League crown once again.
Despite the late sorrow of this game, Firmino is starting on a regular basis and has established himself as an important element of his squad. The same could not be true for the rest of last season, having lost his position on the teamsheet for seven successive league fixtures between November and December.Reports last year stated Gerrard may attempt to reconnect Firmino with his old Liverpool team-mate Gini Wijnaldum by bringing the Brazlian to Al-Ettifaq, the club he is in charge of in the league.Commenting on this idea, Gerrard said: “I obviously know Bobby really well, I’ve been a great fan. I’ve followed him for years. At the moment, he’s Al-Ahli’s player, therefore it’s very tough for me to comment on that issue. But I’ve loved Bobby Firmino since the first day I watched him and I’m a tremendous fan.”As for Mane, the Senegalese star was recently connected with a comeback to European football in the shape of a move to Besiktas. Such a deal failed to materialise, however, after the Turkish transfer market closed on Friday night.
